CLE programs at the 2009 TBA Convention

Below is a schedule of CLE programs planned for the 2009 TBA Convention in Memphis.

Thursday, June 18
Bench/Bar CLE program — 8:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., 3 hours dual credits

Part 1: Appellate Practice CLE: What the Appellate Advocate Wants, Needs and Expects from Trial and Appellate Judges Panel Discussion and Simulated Oral Argument. Produced by Mark Fulks, Senior Counsel and Appellate Team Leader in the Criminal Justice Division of the Tennessee Attorney General's office, the session will also feature Ross Dyer from the Tennessee Attorney General’s Office in Memphis; Nashville attorney David Raybin;  and Memphis Criminal Court Judge Mark Ward.

Part 2: Presentation of ‘Before Atticus said Yes’ a play regarding the discussions prior to Atticus Finch’s acceptance of the appointment to represent Tom Robinson. The play will be followed by panel discussion about bringing one’s own values to the practice of law, the reliance of the appropriate function of the judicial system on the acceptance of pro bono work and the obligations under the rules of professional conduct to engage in pro bono work.
Producers for the program are Legal Aid of East Tennessee Executive Director David Yoder and Andy Branham, director of the Memphis office of Counsel On Call. Both serve on the TBA Attorney Wellbeing Committee.

Friday, June 19
Tennessee Supreme Court — 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., 1 general credit

Join four former Tennessee Supreme Court Justices — Frank Drowota, Mickey Barker, George Brown and Riley Anderson — discussing the most important case law, rules and administrative mileposts of their time on the Court. Moderated by Tennessee Attorney General Robert Cooper.

Howard Baker and Harold Ford Jr. — 10:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m., 1.5 general credits

What does America need to do to get back on track? It’s a question asked during the recent presidential campaign, and one that has become even more compelling as the country struggles with economic recession.

Former Senator Howard Baker and former Congressman Harold Ford Jr. bring their experience and their insight to this CLE program.

Anatomy of a Hoax— 2 p.m. — 4 p.m., 2 dual credits

The attorneys who were ethics prosecutors in the recent Duke University Lacrosse team case — James Cooney, Wade Smith and Joseph Cheshire —
give their fascinating “Anatomy of a Hoax” presentation, providing you greater insight into the events that led to this controversy.

Saturday, June 20
Jury Selection — 9:30 a.m. — 10:30 a.m., 1 general credit

Kicking off the morning program will be a session on jury selection presented by a panel from the U.S. District Court for the Western District. Chief Judge Jon P. McCalla will lead the session that will also feature Judges Samuel H. “Hardy” Mays, J. Daniel Breen and Bernice Donald.

Discovery of Electronically Stored Information — 10:45 a.m. — 11:45 a.m., 1 general credit

Leading the program on Discovery of Electronically Stored Information will be Magistrate Judges Diane K. Vescovo and Tu M. Pham of the U.S. District Court for the Western District and Chancellor Russell T. Perkins of Nashville and Circuit Court Judge Lorrie K. Ridder of Memphis.
